The other big scare I went through was with Night, my sweet tuxedo girl who’s usually calm, quiet, and perfectly predictable. We had been away for an entire month, and my parents would stop by the house to clean the litter boxes and feed the cats. When we finally came back home, life felt normal again. The cats were happy to see us, rubbing against our legs, meowing for attention, following us everywhere. I thought everything was okay… until the next morning.
I was running late for work, rushing around the house, and that’s when I noticed Night walking into the litter box. She stayed there for a moment, then stepped out. A few minutes later, she went back in. Then again. And again. She would squat as if she was trying to pee, but nothing happened.
My heart dropped.

In that moment, nothing else mattered. I grabbed her, still in my work clothes, and rushed out the door straight to the vet. The whole drive there, she was quiet — too quiet — and I kept glancing at her, praying she wasn’t in pain.
Thankfully, the vet told me she wasn’t blocked. In fact, she didn’t have any water in her bladder at all. She was dehydrated. They gave her special food, monitored her, and reassured me she would be okay. Relief washed over me so hard I almost cried right there in the exam room.
But that scare changed me.
